Sean Steeg, Democrat, Candidate for PA House, District 81

What is your position on addressing the cost of housing?

Increasing housing supply and managing the ability of private equity to snap up newly-created homes are the two best ways to control housing costs.

What is your position on healthcare access?

Healthcare should be viewed as a right, not a privilege, and we should take steps with that in mind.

What is your position on immigration policy?

Unlike most nations on the planet, the USA is largely a nation of immigrants. It's no coincidence that fact is true AND we are a global superpower. While unchecked immigration can certainly strain a system, our default position should be one of compassion and welcome.

What is your position on abortion policy?

Abortion access is healthcare access. As state above: healthcare should be viewed as a right, not a privilege, and we should take steps with that in mind.

What is your position on gun ownership policy?

There is a vast amount of improvement in how we manage guns available to us; as it stands, we are awash in a gun violence epidemic of our own making. Even something as simple as treating guns like we treat cars (age limit, insurance requirements, tests before granting access) would be a notable step in the right direction. Overall though, we need to be taking action, because inaction is continuing to be deadly.

What is your position on environmental policy? (ex: addressing climate change, clean water, clean air, etc.)

Climate change is an existential threat to humanity should it be allowed to continue on its current course. Any action we can take to mitigate that should be on the table to stem the tide as best as we can for future generations. Clean air and clean water are everyone's concern. Things like business development are important, but nothing develops in arid soil.

What is your position on LGBTQ rights? (ex: marriage, adoption, gender-affirming care, sports participation, etc.)

I continue to be baffled that this is even a question. LGBTQ people are people. Respect people. Respect who they are and their decisions, as you would expect your identity and decisions to be honored as well.

What is your position on addressing lowering the cost of higher education in Pennsylvania?

The hardest part is adjusting the supply to meet the dwindling demand; we built up our higher education system over the last number of decades, but the number of students is lower now and will continue to lower for at least a few more years yet. The combination of lower birth rates and availability and demand for skilled labor work means lower enrollment numbers, and we'll need to find some way to dial higher education up and down better than we have in the past.
